how it started

Sunside & Co. is the working collaboration between NY based designers Molly Burke of Fleetwood Floral, and Alix DeFabbia-Kane of AED

Call it fate, serendipity, or straight up dumb luck- the origin of this brand is one for books.

It started in 2015 at Massachusetts College of Art & Design in Boston. Molly took a one week intensive glass blowing class as she was finishing up her Junior year. Alix was near the end of her Senior year and happened to be one of the teachers for the class.

Class ended and the two followed each others’ instagram. That appeared to be the extent of their interaction, just a lovely couple of weeks playing with glass. Alix graduated and went after her career as a professional in glass. Molly finished school the following year and began pursuing her career in the floral industry.

Fast forward to 2020: mid pandemic, work at a stand-still, no motivation for creativity- full on stir-crazy ‘will we ever work again’ anxiety realness. Molly had just moved to a super “small-town” type neighborhood in Queens. On a walk to acquaint herself with the new surroundings she began posting a story highlighting the historic gardens in the neighborhood.

Meanwhile, Alix, who had been living in that exact same neighborhood for years, knew exactly where Molly was based off that simple story. Alix sent Molly a DM and that was that, the duo became neighbors (and also BFFs).

The two agreed there was no way this could have been an accident. Like no time had passed, they were back in the hot shop. Knowing full well that blowing glass together during a pandemic was not among their safest decisions. idiots, they’re the first to admit. But there was a mutual understanding that somehow the risk was going to be worth the reward. And thats when Sunside & Co. was born.
